What is a Green Screen?

A green screen is essentially a screen that is completely green in colour that allows the background to be completely distinct from the person or object in focus when taking a video or photo.

As the background is completely green, this allows an editor to replace the existing green background with any desired background, which can give the impression that the scene was filmed in a different location. This also gives the editor the freedom of selecting their desired background.

The use of green screens are not limited to movies where CGI and special effects are incorporated into scenes through it, they are also use in weather reporting broadcasts where the weather broadcasts and advertisement production.

Why is a Green Screen preferred?

A green screen is normally prefered due to the ability to change the background, this gives the editor the flexibility to utilize multiple backgrounds and see whichever background suits better to the occasion.

In addition to the ability to change the background, using a green screen is often cheaper and more efficient than traditional background as the green screen can be moved to different locations unlike natural scenery.

Compared to other methods of chrome keying such as blue screen filming, green screen filming is better as the colour green is more distinct than most other colours.
